If you have no point of reference, does your mind automatically know which way is up?

I'd say no. That's due to the fact that our balancing system is oriented by way of gravity and if your premise includes being free in outer space - far enough away from any gravitational influences - I doubt very much the idea of "up" could ever be resolved.
